Mental Health Awareness Week – May 2022

This week, we are joining Mental Health Foundation to encourage everyone to begin a conversation about the importance of protecting your mental health, and raising awareness of mental health UK wide.

This year’s theme is ‘Loneliness’, which seems fitting given the events of the last two years. It is also a fitting theme for our industry, with many construction workers being away from home for long periods of time.

Over the course of Mental Health Awareness Week we have shared advice, resources, and experiences from our team (#IveBeenThere), including an interview with Declan Roche, ROC’s Founding Director.

Whilst the awareness week is a fantastic way to get messages out to a wide audience, our aim to tackle stigmas and encourage open conversations in the workplace will be ongoing. We must aim for a mentally secure future for all 💚

ROC Team News

Paul Smith Company News 2

This years Mental Health Awareness campaign focused on a theme of getting outside to improve our mental and physical health.  When ROC encouraged our employees to get outside and share their individual experiences, we learnt about an exceptional member of our team….

Paul Smith, ROCMEP Site Manager, founded a running group ‘Pound Hill Pounders’ during the COVID pandemic: a free running group in his local town to encourage local people to get outside and do something positive for their mental and physical well-being.

During the tough lockdowns, Paul recognised that sometimes getting out for a run and a chat was all he needed to clear his head and make a good start to the day.  Creating the local group meant that individuals could find a running buddy without breaking any government guidelines.

Paul says, “the reaction has been overwhelming and we have formed a huge support network, from beginners celebrating their “Couch to 5K” challenge, new friendships and a growing community exchanging expertise. As a group, we are really excited about what our future holds!”

During the month of May, Paul took on a personal challenge where he ran an incredible total of 500km over the month, raising money for the charity Mind, a charity close to his heart.

And it doesn’t stop there…. in June, he will be joining some of his colleagues as they take on the Brighton Half Marathon.

Through all of this, Paul has certainly shown ROC’s core values on a daily basis:

  • Commit and deliver
  • Belief in our product
  • Achieve something every day
  • I have your back

Well done, Paul!
