Reflecting on 20 Years of Growth and Success at ROC: An Interview with Co-Owner Cahal McNicholl

As ROC celebrates a remarkable 20-year journey of growth and success, we chat with Group Commercial Director and Co-Owner, Cahal McNicholl, who shares insights into his journey that has helped propelled ROC from its humble beginnings to becoming a leading Tier 1 M&E contractor.

Q: As an owner and leader within the business, how would you describe your role now, and how has it evolved over the years?
Cahal: My role has changed massively over the years. I started running projects in a £1.5m T/O Electrical Contracting business to now overseeing the finance and commercial departments, sitting on the board of a £40m T/O Tier 1 M&E business – a career path I am extremely proud of.

My role now is mainly ensuring we are as financially resilient as possible to propel the business to the next level. Working closely with our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure they have the tools to succeed by investing in key areas such as personnel, software, and training.

We prioritise promoting the business to secure the right projects with the right clients, fostering long-lasting relationships along the way.

Q:
Taking us back to the early days, what inspired the founding of the company, and what were the initial goals?
Cahal: Simply, to do things better. We could see there was an opening for more efficient working and an opportunity to do things more effectively.

Q: Looking back over the past two decades, what do you consider the most significant achievements for the company?
Cahal: There are lots of defining moments in any business over the course of 20 years. Achieving our first £1m, £5m, and £10m project wins were certainly significant milestones along the way. But I am most proud of the quality and calibre of people we have developed across all departments of the business, from the boots on the ground to our SLT.

Creating our SLT has been so impactful and allowed for smother running of the business. They have been integral the success of ROC in recent times.

Opening our London office and expanding our offering to become a Tier 1 Contractor are also major achievements that have propelled us forward.

Q: How has the industry evolved since the start of ROC, and how has the company adapted?
Cahal: The industry has undergone significant changes since the inception of ROC. There is now a heightened emphasis on fostering robust B2B relationships and prioritising health and safety measures. Something I believe we do very well.

At ROC, we’ve proactively adapted to these shifts, ensuring that we maintain a positive reputation within the industry. Our commitment to cultivating strong partnerships and upholding stringent health and safety standards has been instrumental in our continued success and growth.

Q: Every journey comes with its challenges. What valuable lessons have you learned along the way?
Cahal: That you can’t do everything on your own. You need a strong and well-aligned team who believe in our values to be able to grow a business. Trusting them to succeed is key.

Q:
Can you share insights into the above-mentioned values that have been integral to the company’s identity?
Cahal: Our values stem from a strong belief in having a solid work ethic mindset. It’s about coming to work for yourself, your colleagues, and our clients, and providing the best service possible every day. ROC’s culture is about facing challenges head-on and leading from the front, and it has evolved as new people join with the same mindset.

Q:
As the company enters its next chapter, what are your visions and aspirations for the future?
Cahal: We believe we are only getting started in what ROC can achieve! We aim to take the business to a £100 million+ turn over company, reaching new clients and work streams in the process. We’re grateful for everyone who has supported us and believes in our vision for the industry.

Q:
On a personal level, what motivates you to get up and strive for excellence at ROC every day?
Cahal: There is always more that can be achieved in life and in business, and you have to go out there and get it. If you’re not moving forward, you’re going backward, so I choose to try and move forward every day.

Q: How do you make time for yourself?
Cahal: Very simply, I choose family and friends. Travelling, cooking, hitting the gym, and playing golf are all ways I switch off and recharge.

As a family, we love to travel; experiencing new places with my wife and two boys is the something I will never tire of.

As ROC embarks on its next chapter, Cahal McNicholl’s commitment to excellence and continuous improvement sets the tone for even greater achievements ahead. Here’s to 20 years of success and the exciting journey that lies ahead!

Celebrating 20 Years of Success: An Interview with Declan Roche, Founder & Owner of ROC

As ROC marks an impressive milestone of 20 years of growth and success, we chat with Declan Roche, the visionary behind the thriving business, to reflect on the journey, acknowledge milestones, and share unique stories that have shaped ROC into the renowned company it is today.

As founder and a leader within the business, how would you describe your role now, and how has it evolved over the years?
Declan: Well, the role is very different now… I started ROC as a sole electrician, with a box of tools, a cheap mobile phone, and a small van, with a vision to make huge waves in the industry!

The biggest transition was moving into an office full-time. I really struggled with that for a while. I couldn’t get my head around working in an office all day as I was so used to being on the tools. Of course, over time, you realise how important work in the office is; without the correct procedures and processes a company cannot survive and function.

These days, my main role is business strategy, working closely with our Senior Leadership Team.

Taking us back to the early days, did you always have a vision for what ROC has become?
Declan: Yes, I always had a vision for what I wanted it t o become. There are some brilliant companies in our sector, some great role models to look towards. It’s crazy we are now starting to come up against some of them on tenders. There is plenty of work for everyone, especially for  companies trying to produce a quality product.

Looking back over the past two decades, what do you consider the most significant achievements for the company?
Declan: I think we have had many; 20 years is a long time. The most obvious is changing to M&E from Electrical only. We had tried in a different way early on but pulled back; you need to spot when something is not right and not be afraid to make a change. When we went again, we made sure we had the correct ingredients to make a success of it.

Every journey comes with its challenges. What valuable lessons have you learned along the way?
Declan: You get some difficult projects along the way; these are the ones that teach you to keep things in check.
Keep a good cash reserve for a rainy day because there is one sure thing, they will come!

What aspects of the business are you most passionate about?

Declan: I love when I see the teams pulling together to achieve a task, love seeing people bouncing off each other. ROC is a team effort, and I really believe the culture we have created is what makes people enjoy coming to work.

I also love delivering quality for clients, doing exactly what we said we would do – I know that sounds very simple but its so important to do the simple things right.

Could you elaborate on the importance of company culture at
ROC and how it has contributed to the company’s success?
Declan: Company culture is the heartbeat of ROC. It’s what sets us apart and drives our success. I think it starts by setting the right tone, making sure there is a level of respect for each and everyone around you. What we have at ROC I do believe is very special; there is a team spirit where we talk to each other as equals. When mistakes are made, we are in it together. That’s how you instill trust and build relationships.

From the start, we’ve prioritised creating a culture of respect, collaboration, and support. We’ve fostered an environment where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. Our teams feel empowered to innovate, take ownership, and work towards a common goal.

As the company enters its next chapter, what are your aspirations for the future?
Declan: We feel we are at a very exciting stage at ROC, plenty of market share to go around, and we are well-placed to take some of that. We want to keep delivering and growing as a business and as individuals with like-minded people around us.

On a personal level, how has being part of ROC for two decades impacted your own growth and perspective?

Declan: From early on, I realised that to grow the business, I needed to grow myself, so every day I wake up with a plan and a growth mindset. I keep pushing and learning how to be better. I meditate each day as I feel it keeps me calm and grounded.

How do you switch off and make time for yourself?
Declan: After hanging out with my partner and kids, my favourite thing to do is snowboarding, which I try to do as much as possible each season.

Walking in the countryside and swimming in the sea all year round is something that keeps me feeling alive. I’m turning 50 in May and strive to be as healthy and fit as I can be. I believe everything has to be in moderation, so finding the balance with everything is very important, and still having fun keeps you feeling young.

As ROC celebrates 20 years of excellence, Declan’s journey from a sole electrician to a visionary leader reflects not just the growth of a company but also the personal growth and values that have driven its success. Here’s to many more years of prosperity and innovation for ROC.
